English Dictionary and Thesaurus with Verbs App Reviews

Untrustworthy content

I wrote another review for this, but it didnt get posted--most likely because I was too explicit regarding the definition I found for the word "vestibule". To summarize, one of the first words I looked up was "vestibule", and I was surprised to find a very unexpected definition for the word, and no mention whatsoever of entryways or architecture. I looked up the word elsewhere and found the definition I was expecting. (The definition given by the app was there as well, but as a secondary definition.) Given that experience, Im rating this low because I no longer have any faith in the definitions it gives. I agree with the reviewer who said that the interface is nice, but the content is iffy. Ill never use this app except to confirm what I already know...and that definitely doesnt make me feel good about the $20 I shelled out!

1st Generation Product

This application lacks some very basic words. I may have missed something but it does need to assist when words are not spelled correctly. The operative word is...intuitive! As such, the rating is moving down a notch. Touch and visual interface appear to be well thought out. The numbers selection needs improvement (e.g., no decimals?). For a 1st generation product, the value add appears to be positive. Have not seen other [English] dictionaries available. If the market is not being properly exploited, the developers should take advantage of the situation, focus on the customer and command the market.

Welcomed price drop; buggy UI

I always used Ultralingua mobile on Safari and I loved it. And when I saw the price of this app lowered to $9.99, I purchased it immediately. So I open the app up, and I see two bars on the top and bottom that take up too much of the screen. The UI is inefficient and ugly, and scrolling is buggy sometimes and cuts off the definitions. When you tap on a word, the highlighting is slow and also buggy, I sometimes highlight two at the same time. Why did you guys have to make a new UI? The web app version was really nice and smooth. Please improve the UI, and add a feature that lets us modify the bottom bar with the Dictionaries, Conjugations, and Numbers buttons, like in the iPod app.

I should have purchased it sooner!!

There are too many comments posted from non-users. I think Apple should allow only those that have acutally purchased the app to review it. OK, now that Ive gotten that off my chest. I thought the app was very good for the price. After using it, I now know that it was worth $19, but possibly not $29. The UI is quick, simple, and I like it alot. Not having to connect to the Web is very well worth the price. I would give it 5* if possible words would show up as you type. Interestingly, that feature is included when you type in verbs for conjugations, which I like also. However, if you misspell word, it does offer an alternative, like "Did you mean?". Overall, a great app! Thanks to the developers and I look forward to the updates!!

Fabulous!

Exactly what Ive been looking for, and wishing iPhone had for a year. Terrific.

worth $10

let me address some gripes: pausing/locking up/crashing - i have more problems w/ contacts than this app, it seems fast and responsive overall as-you-type searching would be nice, but the search results are VERY thorough and provide definitions on the results page the ability to touch any word anywhere on the screen and get definition, conjugation or google is an AWESOME feature this app is way better than wedict (ive used) and seems like a better option than the inattentive American Heritage i would look for good updates for this app, as Ultralingua obviously pays attention to reviews (lowered price $20) 5* if audio pronounciations were available

Great App but

As one who actually PURCHASED this app, I find that it is very well done for the most part, and am pleased to have a professionally made app on my Touch. Some criticisms: 1. More words needed. Missing gravitas (as it own entry), gougiere, sybaritic 2. Need better search features and search within entries. Also searching "sybaritic" should list sybarite as a choice. 3. Need a choice to save/delete your own words. All in all WELL worth the 20 bucks!!!

Good app - could be better

Purchased after price reduced to $9.99. Good, basic dictionary. Could be improved by increasing word coverage & expand definitions. Recommend inclusion of suggested reply as word typed into Search. Recommend this app.

Great Price Good Dictionary

The price is finally drop to 9.99, so that is the reason I purchased it. It is actually a good dictionary, but it would be a great dictionary if it provides spelling check if I mistype the word.

I put my money where my mouth is. You dropped it to $9.99 and I bought it

New review. First Ill say thanks for dropping the price down to $9.99. I bought it so I kept my word. Needs some improvements so your Dictionary/Thesaurus is easier to use. 1. Just like in your Conjugations section where you start to type and it narrows down the choices. The dictionary AND thesaurus ought to have this feature. I had this feature when I was using my Treo 650 with the 995 Dict (which was incidentally also $9.99) and take a look at Dictionary.app in both Tiger/Leopard as another example. Both of them allow you to narrow down the search as you type it in. This is particularly useful when Im not the best speller and Im trying to look up the word "apocryphal" for example. 2. Once I find a word in the dictionary I may want to look up the synonym or antonym. In order to do this I have to go back out of the Dictionary and enter in Thesaurus, then retype the word. Again take a look at the implementation in Dictionary.app in Leopard. A single button will allow you to switch from the Dictionary to the Thesaurus without the to retype the word. Making these two simple improvements will give your app more polish and give your customers a more useful/enjoyable experience. My 2 cents. ----------------------------- Old review. I bought a dictionary for my Treo 650 two years back for $9.99 and used it frequently. It was totally worth it. Mac OSX Tiger and Leopard come built in with the Oxford dictionary and Thesaurus, which I use almost daily. I think the iPhone should have a free download of the Oxford dictionary since Apple already licensed it from Oxford. Maybe some bright person will grab the data from /Library/Dictionaries/New Oxford American Dictionary.dictionary and then place a skin and a simple UI for the iPhone version and put it for free on the App store. $20.00 is more than Im willing to pay. Drop it to a more reasonable level and then we can talk. Right now its overpriced.

Very Good and Useful App!

Not perfect, but very good. I like the fact that every word within a definition is "hot" clickable to pull up either the "Dictionary", "Conjugation" or "Google" option for that word. The conjugation feature isnt fully cross referenced unfortunately. For example, ask it to conjugate "boat", and it will say no entries. But go to the definition of "boat", and under the "verb" entry, it is fully conjugated. The interface is very clean and easy to use and read. I wish there were a "back" button. Some selections may take you to a blank "no entries" screen. If you find yourself on a "dead-end" search, you cant return to your previous page and results (unless I am missing something obvious). Overall though, great depth that seems to offer the same collegiate-level dictionary material as Ultralingua 7 for the desktop. Very handy to have on my phone, and certainly worth the price! Ignore the reviews of those who admittedly havent bought the software, and are only giving negative reviews because they dont like the price. How can you rate the value and performance of software if you have never used it? The value here is great, and I own the product!

Buyer

Worst dictionary ever. It doesnt have so many word. And barely makes suggestions for misspelled words. Paid $20 a few weeks ago. Knowing what I know now wont even buy it if it were $5. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY.

Really great App!

I really like the look and clean, simple design of this App. Very nice job. Some suggestions though: 1. You really need the Spell-as-you-type feature. 2. A pronunciation button to hear audible pronounciations of the words we look up. I think your dictionary is great but these 2 missing features are a must have. I would gladly pay for them if that would get them in the App.

Great app.

It would be even greater if they added a flash card section.

Not worth it

Get the WeDict for free unless you need the thesaurus. Neither have pronounciation.

Good dictionary!

It is nice to have a dictionarty on the iPod without internet connection. It would be nice if it would give suggested spelling for mispelled words. I have used it a few days and found some words it does not contain for example apoptosis and perestroika.

Good App!

This app is very useful for me. I am college student and anytime I am stuck on a word I just pull out this little app to help me out. Well worth the 10$ to me.

THIS IS NOT A COLLEGIATE LEVEL DICTIONARY AS STATED!

WeDict is FREE and has much more readable fonts, and most importantly, THIS IS NOT A COLLEGIATE LEVEL DICTIONARY AS STATED! I have been unable to find definitions for MULTIPLE words that are easily rendered in other dictionaries, (WeDict, American Heritage etc). I want my $10 back, what a rip-off!!!!!!

Where is the word-as-you type

I thought most dictionary would have words come up as your typing them, can you incorporate this into an update for us bad spellers. Get SlovoED Dictionaries it has that feature most of them have. Save your money.

$10 Well Spent

With an extremely strict English professor, I just pull out my white phone and make sure what Im turning in is perfect. Love the app.
